Inspiration

Economics and Land Use

Products From Native Ecosystems

Goods From The Woods was conceived as the result of a DOI oil and gas lease public hearing in Homer, Alaska in 1994. George and Penny Frazier observed that political processes and public input were not as highly valued as economic returns and tax revenues in public land use planning.

The Fraziers believed that they could protect wilderness through working with wild products creating sustainable economic returns. Their company, Goods From The Woods was specifically created to protect wild lands through demonstrating the economic value of products made from wild species. The company mantra for the last 14 years has been, "more species, more choices".

Current Considerations

In working with wild harvests The Frazier's have come to see humans are part of the natural system.

We have come to understand that natural systems have their own language. Suffice to say, people need to be in the woods, working and tied to the natural systems.

Scientist cannot possibly hear the language of forests because they are “outcome based.” To hear the forest, you don't listen with modern ears, but with the awareness that there is the voice to all things.” We are not mystics, or soothsayers only people who know have heard the language of life."

We are learning how to live in the space between the other species of this place.

Why certified wild crop organic witch hazel

Penny a former litigation research paralegal in Las Vegas, NV. returned to that land with George to their test the hands on conservation theory with America's Pinyon Pine Nuts. It was the largest land mass they could imagine, 63,000,000 acres of Pinyon / Juniper forests owned by the U.S. government.

There is a great deal written about that work on www.pinenut.com

Also, information specific to managing pinyon pine trees for pine nut production on www.pinonnut.org, a site Penny helped create.

Goods From The Woods began to expand its focus in 2003, to the native systems of the Ozarks. The Ozarks forests had the same issues as the Nevada Pinyon forests. People cut down to trees to graze and it was one of the few ways they could keep their lands.

A Wild Crops Farm began on the Frazier's 12 acre property in Licking Mo. after they received extensive schooling from an older generation in wild craft of the Ozarks. 78 species were identified on that small parcel.

Later the Fraziers expanded their holdings and focused on witch hazel as a keystone species. It is most used botanical in the world - second to none.

The products created on a Wild Crops Farm are second to none. Each and every leaf or flower is hand selected at the opitimum time. The plants are quickly processed and steam distilled with the finest waters. (Coming soon, distilled with Ozark Spring Water). There is "hydro distillation", but rather steam pressure force through the fresh biomass. This is very different from hydro distillation in which the biomass is deposited into the boiling waters. water.

They began working with private forests and wild crop organic certification.

The company began experimenting distilling native plant essence extraction in 2004. They built a small production facility for processing and distillation in 2007. That facility became a certified an organic producer of Witch hazel Hydrosol in 2008. The company eagerly assists smaller farmers and forest owners with wild crop certification .

George Frazier is passionate about local small enterprise and actively engages small manufacturers. George worked with a local scientific glass blower to develop a prototype small distillation unit, that can be spread afford ably among small producers.

George is also the creator of the >Universal Hub System for Geodesic Design and Construction.

Goods From The Woods – A Wild Crops Farm and partners were awarded two Federal Sustainable Research and Education Farmer Grants for work with native plant products in the Ozarks. The Fraziers often give presentations, farm tours. Penny was a delegate to the World Forestry Congress and is very active in work with Non-timber forest products and Special Forest Products on a global level. While

Goods From The Woods has been working at teaching land owners in the region how to obtain economic value from their wild plants since 2005.

Currently, the company is working with leases for wild harvesting and started working with shares with harvesters.

Goods From The Woods and A Wild Crops Farm, together with Ozark Dome are the passions of George and Penny Frazier, who believe above all else, that life is good and we are all responsible for it.

Both George and Penny are life long activists who believe in rolling up their sleeves and creating solutions.
